Muehling was trained as an industrial designer and has worked in many media since he graduated from Pratt Institute in 1975. Although some of Muehling’s designs are sold in the New York boutique he established in 1990, this bowl is part of an all-white line he created for one of Germany’s famous porcelain manufacturers.

Muehling wrote of his designs for jewelry and other decorative objects: “Rocks, shells, eggs, and insects all inspire me and humble me as a designer. . . . I try to keep shapes restrained, abstracting forms in nature, transforming them through the imperative to make objects that look beautiful.” This simple white organic bowl is an object of beauty and elegance, made for everyday use.
