Philippe Starck is a self-proclaimed design star and a lifestyle philosopher. Internationally celebrated since the 1980s for his hotel and restaurant interiors, he is equally known for many furniture and product designs. Like many of his works, the Louis Ghost chair was inspired by an older design—a Louis XV-style chair.
Starck preserved the outline of the eighteenth-century design, but he transformed the chair through the use of a modern, lightweight material and a modern production method: polycarbonate injected into a single mold. The chair can be stacked up to six high and is still available in a variety of pale tints and some opaque colors; this colorless model recalls the acrylic furniture widely popular in the 1960s.
